German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called upon the European Union to decide on the confiscation of frozen Russian assets. During a speech in the Bundestag, he emphasized that merely continuing financial support to Ukraine from Europe is insufficient. According to Merz, seizing Russian assets and redirecting them to Ukraine would enable funding for the Ukrainian military for at least another two years.
In contrast, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, upon his arrival in Brussels, stated that the issue of confiscating Russian financial assets would not be on the agenda of the European Union summit scheduled in the Belgian capital on December 18-19.
"Hungary scored a victory in negotiations ahead of the EU summit. The President of the European Commission [Ursula von der Leyen] announced that the topic of blocked Russian assets will not be discussed," stated Orban, as reported by agency MTI.Russian President Vladimir Putin has remarked that the potential confiscation of Russian assets under discussion in Europe would be an act of theft. As reported by TASS, Russian Justice Minister Konstantin Chuychenko indicated that the country's leadership has already been presented with possible responses to the potential appropriation of Russian assets by Western countries.
